The Challenges and Opportunities Facing Think Tanks in China

The Chinese Think Tank Landscape Mapping Report Workshop is intended to present the findings of the TTCSP comprehensive analysis of a large and representative sample of think tanks in China. The study included a detailed literature review, exhaustive data collection process and an assessment of the trends and challenges facing Chinese think tanks. The study utilizes the data gathered on over 1,418 think tanks by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) during 2020 to provide new refined estimates for the number of think tanks in the region. China’s unique political ideology and rapid economic growth have positioned Chinese think tanks in a critical role of understanding the Chinese policymaking process. Even though the evolution of think tanks in China is checkered, after President Xi’s announcement of building more Chinese think tanks with new Chinese characters, Chinese think tanks have entered a period of unprecedented development. Therefore, it is crucial to analysis and understand the changes, challenges, and future prospects of Chinese think tanks.  Together with the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese think tanks will play an more important role in addressing its challenges and explaining international credibility and influence. Through a critical literature review of current theoretical and empirical scholarship about Chinese think tanks and extensive data collection, the report offers an in-depth qualitative and quantitative analysis of the Chinese think tank landscape, which will also be the main subject of the Virtual Workshop.
